Finding Funding
Acquiring funding is an inescapable part of faculty life, and MSU tries to make it easier for you in various ways:
- MSU offers seed funding for faculty projects, through the central administration and smaller units.
- MSU units compile lists of external funding opportunities for faculty projects; units will generally be glad to add you to their distribution network.
- Units also provide grant writing support, from web-based guidance to assistance with writing the proposal and routing paperwork
- MSU funding for students is also available, as are lists of external funding opportunities for students.
Below are descriptions of these opportunities.
1. MSU Seed Funding for Faculty Projects
Funds for research are available from the central administration and a variety of smaller centers and other units across campus.
- Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies (OVPRGS). Opportunities include:
- Competitive Discretionary Funding Program (CDFP), which funds research that shows significant potential for external funding. Provides bridging grants and seed funding for proposal resubmission. $60 K over two years. Deadline: Quarterly.
- Strategic Partnership Grants (SPG), which fund individuals and teams, 400K over three years. Deadline: January 19
- Humanities and Arts Research Program (HARP), $25 K. Deadline: Quarterly.
- Sustainable Michigan Endowed Project (SMEP). SMEP funds integrative sustainability research through:
- Networking Travel Grants: maximum of $5,000
- Participatory Research Grants: maximum of $10,000
- Integrative Project Grants: $10,000-25,000 over three years
- Project GREEEN. GREEEN is Michigan’s plant agriculture industry initiative and funds $2 million in competitive grants each year. Deadline: January 5
- Center for Water Sciences (CWS). CWS funds projects related to water in the Center’s priority research areas through:
- Venture Grants: up to $10,000 for one year.
- Post-doctoral Grants: up to $150,000 for two years.
- Center for Advanced Study in International Development (CASID). CASID provides funding for course development, research initiation, and travel to faculty members in the social sciences and liberal arts. Deadline: continuous.
- Office of International Development (OID). OID provides travel funding for multidisciplinary researchers.
- Environmental Science and Policy Program (ESPP). ESPP intermittently provides funding for diverse areas of environmental research through the Environmental Research Initiative. Contact espp@msu.edu about upcoming opportunities.
- Institute for Public Policy and Social Research (IPPSR). IPPSR provides periodic funding opportunities related to policy and social sciences.
2. Lists of External Funding Opportunities for Faculty
Many units maintain lists of external funding opportunities for research in specific areas.
- MSU sites for finding external funding sources
- Environmental Science and Policy Program (ESPP). ESPP lists requests for proposals (RFPs) related to all aspects of the environment, for faculty and students. New RFPs are posted on the Web site and circulated biweekly; to subscribe, contact mayaef@msu.edu.
- Center for Water Sciences (CWS). CWS collects RFPs related to water. New RFPs are posted on the Web site and circulated biweekly; to subscribe, contact Erin Dreelin at dreelin@msu.edu.
- MSU Libraries funding lists. Librarian Jon Harrison has compiled multiple funding listings related to the environment for faculty and students. These are posted on the Web site; he also offers workshops on finding funding.
- Michigan Agricultural Experiment Station. MAES collects RFPs focused on agriculture, the environment, and general science; these are posted on the MAES Web site.
- OVPRGS Finding Funding Site. OVPRGS provides links to diverse RFPs and maintains a list of competitions which are institutionally limited (requiring an initial internal MSU application); it also has a funding blog. Subscription is through the OVPRGS Web site.
- College of Veterinary Medicine. CVM collects RFPs related to animal health as well as general science, career development, course development and education. RFPs are posted on the CVM Web site.
- Land Policy Institute. LPI collects diverse RFPs. An updated collection circulates weekly in the LPI newsletter; subscribe online here.
- Non-MSU sites for finding external funds
- Community of Science (COS): RFPs from diverse sources, including federal, state, and foundation grants.
- Grants.gov posts RFPs for all federal agencies.
- AAAS GrantsNet: The American Association for the Advancement of Science compiles opportunities for faculty and students.
- Foundation Center. RFPs from non-profit and private foundations.
- Handbook of Federal Funding for Environmental R&D. To access, use User ID: university, password: member.
3. MSU Grant Writing Support
Units offer assistance in preparing grant proposals, ranging from online guides and informational workshops to writing and submitting the proposal. You may need to be a member of the unit in order to be eligible for support.
- Office of the Vice President for Research and Graduate Studies Research Facilitation and Dissemination Office (RFD). RFD provides grant-writing support for approved projects; Wiki and blog hosting for project and proposal development; training in grant proposal development and project management; and travel support for visits to Federal and other grant officers for discussion of possible projects.
- Center for Water Sciences Proposal Facilitation. CWS will assist faculty in preparing proposal budgets, budget approval, internal routing of forms, and/or grant writing. This support is for CWS members only; to join CWS, contact Erin Dreelin (dreelin@msu.edu).
- Office of International Development. OID offers proposal facilitation services for international research projects.
- Contract & Grant Administration . CGA’s Web site and staff provides information about proposal and budget preparation and conducting research. CGA also has a newsletter; subcribe online at http://www.cga.msu.edu/listserve.asp.
- MSU Libraries proposal guides and funding workshops. Librarian Jon Harrison provides extensive guidance in the proposal writing process. Also available through the library are Foundation Center Online Courses
4. Finding Funding to Support Your Students
Yes, they do need to eat! Below are MSU funding opportunities for graduate students.
- MSU funding for students
Relatively few funding opportunities are explicitly environmental; we have listed more general opportunities as well.- Environmental Science and Policy Program (ESPP) Doctoral Recruiting Fellowships. Several two-year fellowships for matriculating students are given annually; departments must apply on behalf of prospective students. (Deadline: January 30.) ESPP also provides funding for student travel to certain interdisciplinary environmental conferences; contact espp@msu.edu for information.
- Graduate School. The Graduate School lists university-wide fellowships and assistantships offered by MSU. These include recruitment fellowships, travel funding, research enhancement awards, and dissertation completion fellowships
- Departments and Colleges. Check with your home department and college about funding for graduate students; dispersal mechanisms vary.
- Biogeochemistry Environmental Research Initiative (BERI). BERI provides student fellowships and other periodic funding in the area of biogeochemistry.
