Michigan Climate Coalition

The Michigan Climate Coalition (MCC) seeks to foster synergy through information, communication and action, in order to assist Michigan in responding to climate change.

The MCC was founded in November 2010 by MSU Climate Change Leadership Fellows and Michiganders from the public and private sectors – from NGOs, businesses, government, and educational institutions. It is open to all with an interest in climate science, energy efficiency, sustainability and related disciplines.

The MCC is modeled on the Wisconsin Initiative on Climate Change Impacts (WICCI). Like WICCI, the MCC seeks to enhance networking and collaboration, communication and action within the state and beyond.

  • Networking and collaboration: The group's Web site will summarize the climate-related work being done by Michiganders - government entities, academic institutions, NGOs and businesses. Many excellent, complementary projects are occurring, but it can be difficult to find out about them. The Web site will be a single point of access for those interested in tracking and engaging in climate change efforts, enabling collaboration and reducing duplicatino of effort.
  • Communication and translation: The MCC will translate work being done --for example, technical reports -- to user audiences, making it more accessible. There is often a "disconnect" between the scientific community and decision makers; the MCC will help link them.
  • Action and filling in gaps: We will identify where there are gaps in knowledge, so that we can do targeted research to address those needs.

The MCC will provide a flexible basis for collaborative action on the pressing and under-addressed challenge of climate change to Michigan.

Adaptation work: 

The MCC has formed topic-specific subgroups that organize climate change activities, research and initiatives by sector. These working groups, led by key contacts from that sector, address different aspects of climate.
