Scholarships, Fellowships, and Funding Opportunities

  • CIRCLE Graduate Fellowship | Deadline: April 8, 2024

The Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Collaboration, Learning, and Engagement (CIRCLE) will support three doctoral graduate students in the CIRCLE Graduate Fellowship (CGFP). This program will build collaborative and interdisciplinary capacity for the next generation of scholars and educators. In addition to gaining important skills for working across boundaries toward shared goals, fellows will have opportunities to contribute to CIRCLE scholarship, programming, and inquiry.

  • Leadership Fellows Program 2024-2025 | Deadline: Mar 15, 2024

The Leadership Fellows Program aims to provide graduate and professional students leadership development opportunities through engaging with a diverse community of scholars. Each Fellow will develop and exercise leadership skills by creating a change-oriented project aimed at enhancing graduate student well-being.

Seminars, Workshops, and Other Events

  • Forestry Seminar: New materials through the enigma that is lignin| 3:30 - 4:30 PM, Mar 12, 2024 | Natural Resources 225 or Zoom

Charles Frazier, T.M. Brooks Professor of Sustainable Biomaterials, Co-Director, Wood-Based Composites Center, Virginia Tech presents “New materials through the enigma that is lignin.”. Lignin is the enigmatic plant polymer. Many recognize it as an amazing and inspirational evolution of polymer technology. Others describe lignin as an intractable hot mess; once removed from the plant cell wall, it seems to have little value. Underlying the enigma is lignin’s remarkable self-healing tendency, the ability to repair itself when under attack by heat, acids, and microorganisms. Lignin’s enigmatic repair mechanism is leading to new opportunities in renewable materials, as we shall discuss. In person at Natural Resources building 225. Zoom option is available with passcode forestry.

  • Seminar: Insights on dinosaurs and donkeys by John Flesher from the AP | 10:00 AM, Mar 13, 2024 | Room 191 ComArtSci or Zoom

John Flesher is a member of the Associated Press global environment beat team, working with AP journalists in the U.S. and abroad to produce in-depth reports on environmental issues. As a correspondent based in Northern Michigan, he covers breaking news on matters affecting the Great Lakes region such as invasive species and water levels. This will take place in room 191 ComArtSci Building. Zoom option is available with passcode 46852.

  • Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: Kathleen Segerson | 9:00 am, Mar 14, 2024 | Virtual

Dr. Segerson is Board of Trustees Distinguished Professor of Economics at the University of Connecticut. Her research focuses on the incentive effects of alternative environmental and conservation policies, with applications to groundwater contamination, land use regulation, climate change, agricultural pollution, and protection of marine species. She is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the Association of Environmental and Resource Economists, a fellow of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association, and a fellow at the Beijer Institute of Ecological Economics in Stockholm. Her lecture is entitled “Designing effective environmental and conservation policies: The role of individual and collective incentives”. A simple registration is needed to receive the Zoom link.

  • Plant Biology Seminar: Leveraging Evolutionary Innovations to Improve Plant Resilience | 2:30 PM, Mar 15, 2024 | PLB 247 or Zoom

This week’s seminar features Robert VanBuren from Plant Resilience Institute. Drought is the most pervasive issue we face in agriculture today, and water deficit is responsible for most of the global loss in yield and quality. Work in the VanBurenlab focuses on exploring the mechanisms that plants use to combat drought stress in natural and agricultural settings. Light refreshments will be provided. Zoom option is available with passcode 800352.

  • Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: Clarie L. Parkinson | 9:00 am, Mar 19, 2024 | Virtual

Dr. Parkinson is a leading climate scientist who has examined the Earth’s climate system through computer modeling and especially satellite remote sensing, with a particular emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic sea ice. She has worked at NASA’s Goddard Space Flight Center since July 1978. Among her many prestigious honors and awards, Dr. Parkinson is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, the American Philosophical Society, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Her lecture is entitled “From Environmental Progress to Climate Change Challenges”. A simple registration is needed to receive the Zoom link.
