Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: William Sutherland | 10 AM, September 26, 2024 | Online
Dr. William Sutherland is Professor of Conservation Biology, Department of Zoology, University of Cambridge, UK. He is a leading ecologist and conservation scientist. Over the last twenty years he has pioneered a range of approaches to policy and practice including novel means of horizon scanning, identifying policy-relevant research agendas, new techniques for collating and assessing evidence, and processes for embedding experiments into practice. With over eleven hundred named collaborators he has created the website www.conservationevidence.com (which reviews the evidence for the effectiveness of 3155 conservation actions), and a set of tools for making evidence-based decisions and embedding evidence into practice. He was President of the British Ecological Society and regularly advises government and conservation organisations. His outstanding accomplishments have earned him numerous prestigious awards and honors. For example, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Commander of the British Empire. He is also a recipient of the ECI Prize, Sir John Burnett Memorial Lecture Medal, Distinguished Service Award from the Society for Conservation Biology, Marsh Award for Ecology from the British Ecological Society, and many others. His lecture is titled “Converting Science into Policy: A Career Inspired by Rachel Carson”. Dr. Marilyn Brown is a Regents Professor in the School of Public Policy at the Georgia Institute of Technology and a joint faculty member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory. As a national leader in the analysis and interpretation of energy futures, she has done pioneering research on energy efficiency as well as the design and impact of policies to accelerate the development and deployment of sustainable energy technologies. Professor Brown has had major influences on the policy arena through her Presidential appointment in addition to her briefings and testimonies before the Committees of both the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate, as well as many other organizations across local to international levels. She also made significant contributions to the 2007 Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change assessment reports for which the IPCC shared the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize. Her many prestigious honors include membership in the National Academy of Sciences, the National Academy of Engineering, and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Communicating Science Conference - MI 2024 | October 26-27, 2024
ComSciCon-MI is a free workshop focused on science communication. This event is tailored specifically for graduate students and postdocs in Michigan and neighboring regions. The program features panel sessions with approximately 20 invited professional science communicators, writing sessions to hone participants’ skills, peer and expert review of writing, and a pop talk contest where participants showcase their science outreach projects and forge new collaborations.

Dr. Karen Klomparens Endowment in Support of Graduate Fellowships | Deadline: October 4, 2024
This fellowship is awarded in honor of Dr. Karen Klomparens, Dean of the Graduate School and Associate Provost for Graduate Education at MSU from 1997 until 2014, in honor of her unwavering commitment to graduate education. This fellowship was started by Dr. Shobha Ramanand in honor of her faculty mentors, Dr. Kruger and Dr. Sweitzer, and supports graduate students in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations and the Department of Community Sustainability. Applicants must be pursing an advanced degree offered in the School of Human Resources and Labor Relations in the College of Social Science or the department of Community Sustainability in the College of Agriculture and Natural Resources.

USGS/EROS Mendenhall Fellowship in Land Use monitoring | Deadline: November 1, 2024
USGS has an opportunity at EROS for a Mendenhall Fellowship to develop/prototype a monitoring capability for Land Use in the US. This Mendenhall is a great opportunity to further research ideas with the resources and collaboration of the USGS EROS Center. UCAR ASP postorocal fellowship program accepts applications | Deadline: October 31, 2024
The NSF NCAR Advanced Study Program (ASP) is welcoming applications for postdoctoral fellowship positions. The ASP postdoctoral fellowships provide successful applicants with considerable freedom to pursue their own research interests. Fellows develop research projects in collaboration with NCAR scientists and engineers, but all are expected to choose their own research directions and are responsible for the design and conduct of their projects. The Institute for Biodiversity, Ecology, Evolution, and Macrosystems (IBEEM) is a new center at Michigan State University (MSU) designed to bring together scientists studying biodiversity at multiple scales with the goal of increasing visibility and productivity of scientists conducting this important research.
