Prof. Emilio Moran received 2024 Distinguished Partnership Award for International Community Engagement

Congratulations to Prof. Emilio Moran, John A. Hannah Distinguished Professor, for receiving 2024 Distinguished Partnership Award for International Community Engagement at the University Engagement and Research Awards ceremony! This documentary highlights Prof. Moran's work on sustainable clean energy in the Brazilian Amazon.

Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: Yadvinder Malhi “Captured sunshine: what can an energetic view of life on Earth tell us about nature decline and recovery?”

Dr. Yadvinder Malhi is a leading ecologist, Professor of Ecosystem Science at the University of Oxford, and Director of the Leverhulme Centre for Nature Recovery. He is Past President of the British Ecological Society and Past President of the Association for Tropical Biology and Conservation. Among his many prestigious honors and awards, Professor Malhi is a Fellow of the Royal Society, was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire (CBE) in the 2020 Birthday Honours, was recognized by the Marsh Award for Climate Change of the British Ecological Society, and was awarded the Patron's Medal of the Royal Geographical Society. Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: Drew Shindell “Uncovering the Benefits of Climate Change Mitigation for Health and the Economy

Dr. Drew Shindell is Nicholas Distinguished Professor of Earth Science at Duke University. As a leading interdisciplinary scientist, he has testified before both houses of Congress and made numerous media appearances. He chairs the Scientific Advisory Panel to the Climate and Clean Air Coalition and serves on the Science Advisory Board of the US EPA. His exceptional accomplishments have been recognized by many prestigious awards and honors. For example, he is a member of the National Academy of Sciences, a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, a global “Highly Cited Researcher”, and a recipient of the Scientific American Top 50 Scientist Award. Why Should a Married Man Fetch Water? Masculinities, Gender Relations, and Household Water Insecurity in Urban Malawi

Ellis Adjei Adams is an Associate Professor of Geography and Environmental Policy at the Keough School of Global Affairs, University of Notre Dame. Dr. Adams is also an ESPP alum. Adams was the recipient of the 2020 Distinguished Emerging Scholar Award in African Geography from the Association of American Geographers and a co-recipient of the Nabuo Maeda International Research Award by the American Public Health Association. His current research converges on three main domains: 1) urban water insecurity, 2) water policy and governance, and 3) gender, water, and sustainable development. In this talk, he will use his research in Malawi’s urban informal settlements to highlight three key themes: 1) everyday urban water challenges 2) principal sources of environmental risk exposure from water collection, and 3) the intersections of masculinities and gender-based norms with water fetching labor and risk exposure. Rachel Carson Distinguished Lecture: Richard Church “Spatial Optimization and Conservation Biology”

Dr. Richard Church is a leading interdisciplinary scientist and Distinguished Professor Emeritus of Geography at the University of California – Santa Barbara. He has conducted pioneering research on spatial optimization and Geographic Information Science applied to urban systems, environmental and natural resource protection, forest operations, transportation systems, and location theory and modeling. His outstanding accomplishments have been recognized by numerous prestigious honors and awards. For instance, he is an elected member of the National Academy of Sciences, Fellow of the Regional Science Association International, Fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, recipient of the University Consortium for Geographical Information Science Research Award and The William Alonso Memorial Prize for Innovative Work in Regional Science.   • Urban Community Engagement Fellows Program | Deadline March 29, 2024

    The Urban Community Engagement Fellows (UCEF) Program is a joint initiative of Michigan State University's Graduate School and the Office of University Outreach and Engagement. UCEF will pair a multidisciplinary team of MSU graduate students with Lansing-area community partners to envision and complete community-identified projects that make a substantive difference in revitalizing Lansing.   • Community Engaged Research Fellows Program | Deadline March 29, 2024

    The Community-Engaged Research Fellows Program offers a yearlong, cohort-based, faculty and academic staff development opportunity for up to four early- and mid-career faculty and four academic staff to strengthen their community-engaged research (CER) skills, develop CER projects in partnership with communities, and produce scholarly products. Fellows must be MSU employees, will receive a $2500 stipend and have access to community-engaged research project money. Contact Miles McNall (Mcnall@msu.edu) with your questions.

  • Emerging Engagement Scholars Workshop | Deadline April 1, 2024

    This intensive professional development program provides advanced doctoral students and early career faculty with background literature, dialogue, mentoring, and workshops designed to increase their knowledge and enhance their practice of community-engaged scholarship. Participation in the Emerging Engagement Scholars Workshop (EESW) is limited. Interested participants must apply and be nominated to be considered for the EESW. This year's EESW will take place on Monday, October 7 and Tuesday, October 8, 2024, immediately before the Engagement Scholarship Consortium conference in Portland, OR. The theme of this year's conference is "Pathways to Prosperity: Building Sustainable Futures through Community Engagement". All EESW participants will receive a free registration to the conference.   • William W. and Evelyn M. Taylor Endowed Fellowship for International Engagement in Coupled Humans and Natural Systems | Deadline: April 5, 2024

    MSU Graduate students who are performing research related to the sustainability of fish, wildlife, or water resources using an integrated or joint approach that links humans with their natural environment are encouraged to apply for this fellowship. Recipients should be conducting research in a global context and are expected to immerse themselves in their international experiences.

  • MSU Summer Intensive on Community Engaged Scholarship | Deadline April 5, 2024

    Michigan State University’s Office for University Outreach and Engagement is pleased to host the seventh annual Summer Intensive on Community-Engaged Scholarship, June 3-7, 2024. We welcome community-engaged scholars and practitioners with interests in community-engaged research and community-engaged teaching and learning, including service-learning, informal learning, and community-engaged research in courses. Through interactive workshops, field trips, lightning talks, case studies, panel discussions, and individual consultations, Summer Intensive participants explore big-picture issues related to community engagement in a learning community setting and develop strategies and plans for their own successful engagement activities.

  • CIRCLE Graduate Fellowship | Deadline April 8, 2024

    The Center for Interdisciplinary Research, Collaboration, Learning, and Engagement (CIRCLE) will support three doctoral graduate students in the CIRCLE Graduate Fellowship (CGFP). The CGFP is a guided fellowship focused on interdisciplinary research and practice. Fellows in the program will develop skills and knowledge related to the practice of interdisciplinary inquiry and collaboration, including qualitative and arts-based methods, team building, facilitation, and critical engagement with the concept of interdisciplinarity.

  • Asian Pacific American Studies Graduate Fellowship Program | Deadline: April 15, 2024

    The APAS Graduate Fellowship offers MSU graduate students a unique opportunity to develop skills in research, professional development, and community engagement in ways informed by Asian Pacific American scholarship and praxis. The 2024-25 APAS Graduate Fellowship will be awarded to five (5) graduate students who demonstrate academic excellence and a commitment to a career that incorporates the application of Asian Pacific American Studies.

  • Neogen Land Grant Prize | Deadline April 25, 2024

    This $40,000 endowed award program seeks to advance the work of an MSU graduate student whose research has the potential to contribute to economic and scientific improvements in society, with a promise of practical applications that benefit U.S. economic interests. Applicants must be graduate students in good standing who have successfully passed their preliminary exam, have a track record of research accomplishment, and a project that is ripe for translation to impact through a commercialization/dissemination pathway.
